Other Courses Available
Currently there are four main types of course:-
Saturday Study Days
●
Covering the
ground in
outline and
pointing the
way to
further
reading, our
Saturday ‘in
a day’
introductions
form
gateways to
further
study for
busy people
who want to
know more
about
theology and
think
through
their faith.
It’s
audacious,
but in the
past we have
tackled the
philosophy
of religion,
the two
thousand
years of
Christian
history and
Christian
ethics in a
day. So
often our
understanding
of subjects
like these
is ‘bitty’;
these study
days enabled
people to
put the bits
and pieces
they knew
into the
context of
the bigger
picture.
Bite-sized Sessions
● Our Bite-sized courses (two or three sessions) cover a wide range of topics, indeed almost anything that could come under the umbrella heading of ‘Christian studies’, including music, art, literature, Biblical studies, history, archaeology, spirituality and many others. Recent examples have included a much appreciated introduction to The Acts of the Apostles in which Dennis Stamps in three sessions gave people a rare opportunity to have an overview of a book we so often read in isolated shorter passages. In the same term three talks focussing on the person of Judas looked at the way both the New Testament and later literature have treated this enigmatic character and also detailed the contents and significance of the recently published and much-hyped Gospel of Judas. Next term – and the one after – and the one after that – will be entirely different!
Ten Week Courses
● Our Ten-week courses also cover the same range of subjects. For instance, you can study the major world religions with a specialist tutor or watch out for a course assessing the major themes of the Reformation and their relation to your contemporary view of Christianity.
Quiet Evenings and Meditations
● We hold occasional quiet
days or evenings in the Abbey
or other
local venues with guided meditation or Compline and we mark special occasions with occasional special lectures.
For up-to-date details of all these please see the next term programme page.
