Dave Dickinson
Director
Dave Dickinson, a Methodist minister in central St Albans, was appointed Director in 2005.
Whilst in theological college he submitted a dissertation on the hermeneutics of Rudolf Bultmann in 1987. His studies for his Oxford MTh degree in 1997 included papers on church-synagogue relations, the Celtic spirituality of R. S. Thomas, the role of the church in maintaining the self-esteem of older people, hymns in the church’s liturgy and the sociology of Junior Church.
Having had a long-time interest in the relationship between literature and theology since his days as a secondary school English teacher, his MTh thesis applied literary theory to the practice of preaching. More recently, Dave was awarded a PhD by Oxford Brookes University for his work on sermons in fiction entitled ‘Unspoken Sermons’: Christian Preaching in British fiction 1979-2004.
His main interest is in contemporary fiction but he is currently working on faith and fiction, homiletics and the use of modern secular literature in weddings and funerals.
